The Camp Counselor program places you in direct contact with citizens from the U.S. and the world, allows you to plan for travel adventures big and small across the 50 States, and helps to grow your CV at a U.S. Summer Camp in an leadership position.
Camp Roles
- General Camp Counselors are enthusiastic, creative, hardworking, role models with a wide variety of skills – a guru in the cabin, on the field, at the waterfront, or anywhere at camp! General camp counselors are responsible for leading campers and ensuring safety both in the cabin and at activity areas throughout camp.
- Specialist Camp Counselors are experts in activities like arts & crafts, archery, climbing, swimming, nature, and more with the skills to share their expertise and passion. Specialist camp counselors are responsible for designing lessons, instructing campers, and maintaining a safe environment.
- Faith-based Camp Counselors are fun, engaging, leader who enjoy making faith a part of everyday life. Faith-based camp counselors are responsible for leading campers and ensuring safety at both in the cabin and at activity areas throughout camp.
- Special Needs Camp Counselors are superheroes in plain clothes with the power to adapt activities, games, and everyday life skills for various levels of ability. They are responsible for creating an inclusive environment, assisting campers with personal care (ex: feeding meals), and ensuring safety for campers with disabilities both in the cabin and at activity areas throughout camp.
- Lifeguard Camp Counselors
- Support Staff Participants are team-players who enjoy working in operational roles to ensure overall success. Support staff work in roles such as cooking meals in the kitchen or maintaining cleanliness standards at the camp.
Who can apply for Summer Camp USA?
To work at camp in America, you need to be eligible for a J1 cultural exchange visa. This allows you to work for the duration of your camp job – with 30 days before and after to travel. The application process for a J1 visa consists of an online application and in-person interview at a US Embassy or Consulate in your home country. Most nationalities can apply, you’ll also need to be:
- Aged 18-30 (you must be aged 18 by 01 June of the summer you’re travelling). Able to fly to the USA before 10 June
- Able to commit to the whole camp season, typically 9-12 weeks
- Be a fluent English speaker with no criminal history
- Have some prior experience working with children or young adults
- Have a passport that’s valid for at least six months beyond your stay
- Have proof of an onward flight from the USA
